New State Law
So did you all hear about the new law that TEXAS was the first state to pass? Starting in the 6th grade it will be mandatory for all girls will have to have the HPV vacine. And I'm equally as shocked that Rick Perry was the one who signed the bill into law. For those of you who live under a rock, HPV is the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer. I am not sure what I think about that. I mean I think we should do all we can to help prevent cancer. On the other hand, what kind of message does that send? It kind of reminds me of the big debate in the 90's about handing out condoms in schools. Every abstinece based program out there had a fit about the message that put out there for kids. I remember in high school lots of moms put their daughters on the pill. They knew their daughters were having sex, and they didn't want them coming home pregnant. Not my mom...no way!
I don't know, I just think this is such a sad, fallen world. The cynic is me says, yeah their going to do it and we need to protect them. And by that I don't mean all kids. I think you have the group of kids that, yes they are going to have sex. And then you have the group that make a mistake. And as humans, we all know the price that a mistake can cost. But then the good part in me says, why do we have to be so cynical? Why can't we just teach our kids what is right, and have faith that they will follow in that? The jury is still out for me on this one. I don't know...what do you think? I think a big part of what I don't like, is that I am being told I have to immunize my daughter and I don't have a choice. My state is making that choice for me. I heard something about being able to get out of it by theological choice, but I didn't get all details. But regardless, I don't think it's right to be told what we should do or not do...are we not in control of the choices for our families? Should the state of Texas be able to decide what is best for my daughter over me?

You think that's bad, have you heard about the "No Spanking" Law going to Senate? I will be breaking the law in my home. Possibly on this immunization one as well. Who are they to tell me how to parent my children???
Yes, I did hear something about that, but I didn't know all the details so I didn't mention it. I think that is absolutely insane. I can't imagine anything like that getting passed...I pray at least.
I can't believe that law passed. I think it is terrible. What is crazy is that long term studies of the vaccine have NOT been done. There could be a side effect that does not show up right now, but when the girls are 40, it could cause some other type of cancer. They don't know. Also, I would like to see how many adolescent girls were actually given the vaccine and how many had side effects. That is a ridiculous law and when I have a daughter, she will not have that vaccine.
The moral aspect of the vaccine is another story. I think that parents have got to teach their kids about STD's, teen pregnancy and things like cervical cancer so that they will choose for themselves not to have multiple sex partners. The parents must be the ones who do their best to teach their kids to make good decisions. If the parent's would do that a vaccine like this wouldn't be neccessary.
Larissa,
This comment has nothing to do w/your latest post, and is probably going to be longer than most posts, but...I have just read through your blog for the first time. Megan told me that I needed to get on here and read about all that is going on w/you, and how amazingly you are handling everything. She is so right. You are a strong, Godly woman, and an encouragement to me. Thank you for so openly sharing your story -- the good and the bad. God has given you an amazing amount of strength and clarity through all of this, it sounds like, and I agree with what you said in one of your posts, that He is somehow going to use this as a ministry for you. I really believe that there are going to be women who are going to benefit so much from hearing your story and how God is getting/has gotten you through. I've looked for you at Monterey, but haven't seen you in quite a while (in fact, it was almost a year ago that I gave you your massage! i do pregnancy massage, let me know if you want one!), but I'm glad that you are getting involved in the single parents class there. I'll have to look around for you more. Hope to see you sometime this weekend at Homecoming stuff. Thanks again for sharing your story, and for letting God use you in so many ways. You're in my prayers.

Finally, someone else has joined my bandwagon! They've been running these "cutesy" little commercials here for the vaccine. I wish someone would stand up and tell the truth as to what HPV is and exactly how you get it. I had no idea they were making the vaccine mandatory in TX?! Our country seems to be solving symptoms instead of problems at times.
